Book Reviewing 101 – You can do it!

scatter reviewAnyone who has had any contact with an author knows they’re often desperate for reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and basically anywhere reviews can be posted.  Readers are sometimes hesitant to post a review because they feel an expectation to write something lengthy and insightful.  It can seem daunting.  But a review doesn’t have to rival the length of a novel.  It just needs to comment on one.

Here’s a secret: reviewing can be quick and easy!  And reviews really are important for the publishing and reading community.

First up: The easy option

Post a star rating on Amazon or Goodreads.  Literally just a star rating.  This alone is enough to make a difference.  Did you like it?  Roughly how much?  Done.  Easy.  That rating will help show the over-all quality of the book and count towards the number of reviews it has received.

If you want to get fancy, add a word or two.  “Enjoyed it very much”  “Loved it” or “Good” are all perfectly fine reviews.

Wanna go advanced?

Writing a more in-depth review isn’t too tricky either.  Just remember – this is supposed to be fun.  It’s not homework. It’s just letting people know your opinions about the book.

Some things to comment on include:

  • What was the overall concept of the book (without giving too much away)
  • How much did you enjoy it?
  • What elements did you particularly enjoy?
  • Who was your favourite character?
  • Did the plot surprise you?
  • Was it well written and edited?
  • Did it fit within the genre it was marketed as?
  • What was the pace like?
  • Did the characters seem well developed?
  • Who would you recommend this book to?
  • What would you like to have seen improved?

Keep in mind that this is something someone put a lot of time and effort into creating so even if you didn’t particularly like it, be kind in the way that you say it.  Keep any criticism specific and about the work.  It’s always good to include something positive.

Now hit post and you’re done.  Simple.

Thank you – your review helps writers in their careers and helps readers find the kind of books they like.  You’re awesome.
